Was that Just a Box of Rain?

dso

File this under ‘you can’t make this stuff up’. Jersey City councilman, Steven Lipski, was arrested for urinating on the crowd from a balcony of a Washington night club during a Dark Star Orchestra concert last Friday night. For those who are unfamiliar with DSO they are a Grateful Dead cover band. The same band that not one, but both of my kids are going to see the night after Thanksgiving. Perhaps they should bring their umbrellas to avoid that potential Box of Rain.

With more Dead shows in my past than I care to admit, I can say that public peeing at such events was not all that outrageous. But off the balcony? Hey Steve, get a grip. And at 44 and in the public (or is that pubic) eye, perhaps a little discretion is in order.

I believe he was in a state that my family likes to refer to as ‘that guy’. You know the one. We have met ‘that guy’ before. They are like a tribe. One of them puked down my son’s shoulder at his first Jets game when he was 8-years-old (funny how he never asked to go again for a long time). I believe another spilled a beer down the part of my mom’s hair at a Rangers game. And of course game day in Madison, Wisconsin brings out scores of ‘that guy’.

In The Daily News report of this incident a source stated, ” he was very drunk”. REALLY now? Well this comes as a surprise. Don’t most middle-aged guys pee off a balcony when they are stone cold sober? Could they not get a better sound bite than that one?

So You Want to be in the Secret Service?

secret-service

Driving in my car today I heard a radio spot for…

The Secret Service. All I could think was, do they mean THE Secret Service? Like the White House guys? How could this be? Do they really recruit on the radio? This does not seem all that selective to me.

The spot went something like this:

“Do you want an exciting career that pays well? Have you ever considered a career in the Secret Service?”

Correct me if I am out of line here, but I seem to recall that the line after ‘Do you want an exciting career that pays well?’ is usually ‘Have you ever considered a career in air conditioning and refrigeration?’ Not that I am dissing the AC and fridge crowd here, it is an honorable living, but I think it is more likely that the everyman/woman would probably be more fit to perform that job than say…

guard the friggin’ president!

Of course I had to check out their website. The first position available:

Special Agent (what young boy does not dream of this one. I keep humming Secret Agent Man in my head now).

Damn, I wish I wrote the phone number from the commercial down!

Note to self: drop Obama a note about this.

Oh Oh Obama!

Hard to believe but I am kind of speechless.(I said ‘kind of’).

Sitting here listening to the last speech I will have to hear from John McCain for a long, long time I am in awe of the perseverance of the man I am very proud to call my president. Let me add that McCain was quite gracious while his audience was not. As my friend Gibs just said, he was way more sincere in defeat than he was in debate.

In celebration of this historic event I am posting a part of Jana’s photo essay of the election on campus.

Yes baby girl, anything can happen. The man they said could never beat Hillary… did. The man they said could never survive the Republican attack machine… did. I am so very happy for you that your introduction to the voting process of this great nation has been so historical. (even if the mechanics in Wisconsin were kind of lame)

Election Day is Not for the Faint of Heart (vol 2)

Chickens! All of you. I know there are plenty of you lurking out there who wanted to comment on the guest rant but were scared away. Ha! So much for ‘the conversation’.

I Could Cry election update:

1. I voted and not gonna lie, cried a little as I left (because after all it is Tuesday)

myvote_small

2. First report in from Jana; Univ. of Wisc. is going wild with Obama frenzy. Sidewalks are ‘chalked’ pro Obama, there are campaign trucks around and the atmosphere sounds so college campus electric that I am very jealous indeed.

3. My college thread is taking a poll on the final electoral vote count, anyone want to throw in some numbers?

4. I must have been the only one on earth who did not realize that Starbucks was giving free coffee to voters and I actually paid. (and was thrilled that the latte was more than I paid for a gallon of gas)

Election Day is Not for the Faint of Heart (guest post)

Badge - 2008 election

Time to Cry Tuesday is suspended this week for Election Day. I refuse to believe that I will feel the need to cry. I will stay optimistic and hope this country will choose to evolve rather than send us careening into the abyss. That said, the following guest post is a bit harsh, so either fasten your seatbelts or check back later. Today just might prove to be a multiple post day.

This is written by a friend who is both rabid outspoken and endearing. He has spent a good portion of his career in and around political campaigns and his opinions are always fresh and sans BS, albeit crass at times. Nonetheless, when he hits a rant like the one below I sit back and enjoy the ride. (BTW, this usually is accompanied by multiple shots of Patrón – helps it go down smoother) This does not reflect my views, per se, but I sure do love to hear him spew. Damn, should have done a video of this. Inflection and facial expressions are half the fun.

Here goes:

My advice to BO and the new gang:

Fuck the cumbaya.

Politics is a contact sport. After 8 years of getting your head beaten with a club you feel compelled to bring everyone together?  NO. NO. NO.

You must expel the philistines from the promise land… cut the head of the snake. Clear the Justice Dept. out down to the janitors. Cut the bipartisan shit. They don’t share. They don’t like you. And if you let them stay in the castle they will only endlessly plot against you until they get you… they are not us. They are not sharers. They didn’t read the Kindergarten sharing book. And they must be sent from the promised land.

If we win both houses, 60 for the filibuster. And the presidency, fuck them. And as fast as you can print new bills fix the shit storm we now find ourselves in. Give me back my civil liberties and rewrite the Patriot Act. Restore our international credibility. Let everyone know loud and clear that in 21st Century America healthcare IS A RIGHT. Start to balance the budget, and try to explain to working people and our middle class that republicans are not like them just because they believe in G-d.

But most importantly, here’s the point:

When you’ve been bullied, you have a choice. Kiss and make up or punch ’em in the nose; I say punch ’em in the nose and send them home. You stand a better chance of it not happening again… or you can be a Democrat and leave the wolves in the hen house.

And then it will be Palin in 2012.

No justice, no peace.

Wow, I feel better!

I told you he was something else, didn’t I? I am pretty sure I just lost a reader or two on that one. Or perhaps I picked up a few!

Sarah Palin Pranked

This could be the best thing that happened to the Obama campaign yet.The Masked Avengers of CKOI, Audette and Sebastien Trudel, staged this fake call from ‘Nicolas Sarkozy’ to Palin and she was completely clueless even as they ratcheted up the absurdities. “I wanted to see how (Palin) was on an intellectual level,” Audette said.

Not so much!

Ben Smith of Politico was one of the first to pick this up from The Canadian Press.

A candid peak into how she carries herself with a foreign president will surely make the hairs on the back of  your neck stand on end.

A few highlights:

When she gets on the phone and mistakes the assistant for Sarkozy: “It’s not him yet Bexi, I always do that.”

When discussing hunting, which Audette refers to as his ‘love for killing animals’ Palin replies “We can have a lot of fun together while we’re getting work done. We could kill two birds with one stone.” At which point Audette makes a joke about not bringing Cheney and Palin offers up the fact that she is s good shot.

He mentions his special adviser to the U.S. Johnny Hallyday who is actually a french singer and actor, singer Stef Carse as Canada’s prime minister and Quebec comedian and radio host Richard Z. Sirois as the provincial premier. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t know any of these guys, or the correct names, but I AM NOT FRIGGIN RUNNING FOR VICE PRESIDENT. After all, can’t she see Canada from Alaska?

Personally, I was thrilled that she did not offer up a Sarah Palin condom.

Time to Cry Tuesday – Let the Daughters Speak Out

I first saw this video on PunditMom, a fellow blogger at 50-Something Moms blog. (I simply love her daily commentary).

Sorry email subscribers, you probably won’t be able to view this video without going online to the blog, but I urge you to do so. This is very powerful.

Hey, I love a good Sarah Palin Condom or an SNL sketch just like the rest of them, but my fear is that we have all gotten so caught up with Joe the Plumber, hockey moms, mavericks and you betcha’s that we are mired in the satire and don’t stop to really consider the ramifications. I had a friend say the other day that now is not the time to be a one-issue voter. That our country is in such turmoil we need to look outside our personal pet issues and vote for what is best for this country. Thankfully for me, both of those ideas go hand in hand.

If you have a daughter, this one will give you chills. If you are a women, it will make you feel proud of the generation that is speaking out in this piece. Hey, and if you are a (straight) guy, there is a good chance you can ‘get you some’ if you send this to your significant other. (sorry, even Time to Cry Tuesday needs a little levity).

Sarah Palin Condom!

…or why you should always have $5 in your pocket in Times Square.

I kid you not, my friends. Oh no, did I just say ‘my friends’? Help, I think my brain has been infiltrated by election pop culture. Um, do you think? This is my 4th friggin’ consecutive post on this drivel. I can’t help it, everyday gets more amusing.

Back to the story of the condom. I was walking from Penn Station to meet Gary and some friends for dinner on 56th Street. For those who know NY, this is a walk through the belly of the beast known as Times Square. At rush hour! This is about as out of the basement as you can get.

Overstimulation is an underestimation.

I was getting into the bob and weave of the ebb and flow of bodies and traffic, street noises and meat-on-a-stick smells, when all of the sudden I hear:

“Get your Sarah Palin Condoms. Limited Edition!”

What? Are you KIDDING me? And there it was again, coming from another place. And then another. There must have been a half a dozen young men carrying boxes of condoms. A whole swarm of condom hawkers. (BTW, they also had Obama and McCain – those are simply not funny).

But Palin condoms? With the tagline “When abortion is not an option”. That is absolutely hysterical.

Here is the best part. A young french man came up to the vendor as I was buying one.

French Man: what are theez?

Vendor: Sarah Palin condoms.

French Man: Ugh! I wooood not put my deeeek in one of theez.

And this is when I knew for sure that the humor gods had smiled down upon me once again and I could live another day!

(fyi, you can purchase them here, but they are cheaper on the street if you happen to be in Times Square).

Also, my candidate paper dolls came today. They are so amazing I must do a follow-up post on them. Just a preview… first page, they are in their underwear!

Joe Twitter

I don’t know how I ever watched a debate without Twitter. (have I said that before?) Today I have a little poll I thought would be kind of fun. The screen grab below is a montage of some of my favorite tweets on the Plumber stream that popped up after about the 5th mention of good ol Joe (BTW, he has no plumber’s license).

Now all you lurkers, let’s show a little love and cast your vote. After all it is your responsibility as a citizen of the couldcryosphere. And email subscribers (you know who you are) you are going to have to jump onto the blog to cast your votes. C’mon, this will make some tweeters out there all sorts of happy. I don’t even know any of these guys… yet. So cast your vote below and let your voice be heard. Oh and don’t forget to check out the t-shirts and stuff.

Campaign Voodoo-Op?

In celebration of the last presidential debate taking place just minutes away from where I live I thought I would bring this wonderful find to your attention.

Dover Publications has jumped on the election bandwagon with these campaign edition paper dolls. (fyi, if you are reading this on a blackberry you MUST find a computer to see this picture!)

I don’t think I can resist the buy. They are ‘collectibles’ for G-d sake. Somewhere down the line I know I will be so sorry if I don’t own these. Kind of like when I had to go back into the store to buy the Albert Einstein action figure last week. Hey, where did I put that? Isn’t it time I start posing him in odd places?

Take a look at the art on both of these. Obama has that suave debonair look of a 1960s James Bond. McCain? Well he has no neck for starters. Or maybe it is just that his head is not on right. (cheap shot, I know).

What struck me was their hands. The gestures are actually quite true to life.

The best part of all? These come with election night scorecards! THAT is truly fabulous.

Maybe I should buy these for Jana to celebrate her first election!

Go ahead, order them, they are only $7.99 each!

Now everyone get ready for the debate and don’t forget to drink on maverick.

I am very excited to be posting at 50-something mom blogs today. Don’t miss my tattoo thoughts.
