The Burp Castle

burp_castle

File this one under, Only in NY!

I passed this today on a little family excursion through the East Village. Burp Castle, Temple of Beer Worship is located on East 7th Street between 2nd and Copper Square in case you want to visit. Not far from McSorley’s Old Ale House, this would make a nice beer tour if you are from out of town.

Not too sure about the Brewist Monks since 1022 a.d. but hey, it looks like a fun place.

Like a Sex Machine…

engrish-funny-sex-machine

This amazing photo is from the James Brown Memorial Steakhouse in Osaka via engrishfunny.com That is one James Brown sized piece of meat in that picture! With all the bad press surrounding his passing I though perhaps a little fond memory of The Godfather of Soul was in order today.

Amy and Gary trivia: We walked back down the aisle at our wedding after the ceremony to James Browns’ I Feel Good. (We thought Sex Machine was inappropriate – get up… get on up!).

Here’s a little James Brown to brighten up your day. I dare you to Feel Bad when you watch this baby. That jacket alone could make anyone happy! So Good!

Snow Bird…

snow-bird-sex-drive

Snow Bird.

Sex Drive.

Sex Drive.

I believe the missing license plate in that sequence would be:

Cialis*

I found the juxtaposition of these quite funny. Even funnier, the fact that Sex Drive had to be repeated. Was it for reasons of hearing, eyesight or poor memory?

Best Five Dollars I’ve Ever Spent

IMG_3941

This little baby only set me back $4.99 and I spent the better portion of the afternoon floating on her. When you talk about simple pleasures, this would be at the top of the list.

Nothing like a day of hydrotherapy, floating away in the Gulf, the temperature of a bathtub on a day in the mid 90s. THIS is the kind of job I could get used to.

This little weekend getaway is the culmination of a very long birthday celebration. Turning 50 has not been bad. Not bad at all.

Long Guyland, New Yawk

Picture - Map of Long Island - Nov 1, 2008_0

For those who do not live in these parts, that is the way people tawk heah.

Well, not all of us, but I suppose many. If you are a New Yorker you can tell the subtle difference between the Brooklyn dialect and that of  say, Joisey. If not, we all sound the same to you. It is even more apparent when you were raised here and then move away. My brother gets a big kick out of hearing the old NY-speak.

I bring this up today because I have encountered a particularly classic brand of the Long Guyland accent this week. As I posted earlier, I am a Jury Duty phone alternate this week. Every night, after 5, I have to call in to see if I am required to show up the next day. Yes, this is very convenient… NOT!

Anyway, when I called in the second night and every night since, the man on the recording had the most classic form of the Long Island accent. The first time I actually laughed out loud and then proceeded to leave his accent as my Facebook status. It had such a warm reception there I thought I would bring it over to the blog and share it with all of you. Here is what he said:

“This is the Nassaw County Jurah notification system. You must locate yaw jurah numbah located on paht A of yaw jurah caud. Yaw numbah stahts with the lettah aw.”

Let me translate that for you:

“This is the Nassau County Juror notification system. You must locate your juror number located on part A of your juror card. Your number starts with the letter R.”

Hey, there’s no place like home.

This reminds me of an ad campaign I did in a High School art class…

Long Island, more than just an accent!

kovics, renkas and povas, oh my!

tennis-ball

Where are all the American women in tennis?! (sans Williams squared, of course).

What, you say? Could Amy actually be writing about tennis? From the basement, no less?

Listen folks, I may not play tennis but I am surely surrounded by it. My husband and dearest friends play. A good chunk of my disposable income goes to all things tennis-related in order to keep Gary from jumping off the 59th Street Bridge, and it’s the first week in September in NY, so not paying attention to the US Open is like living under a rock.

We were discussing the women of the Open over dessert tonight (ok, so it was not just Gary and I, my in-laws and a neighbor were here) and it came to my attention that American women do not play tennis.

What?!! In my zip code I am looked at like I have 3 heads because I don’t swing a racquet. I guess they meant professionally.

I took a little spin over to the US Open official website and what I found was, nestled around the Williams sisters in the top 5 seeded positions were: Safina, Barrois, Czink, Rybarikova, Dementieva, Oudin, Jankovic and Shvedova.

That is way too many consonants for this Jew to pronounce. And the rest of the list was equally non-American.

So tell me, tennis women of America (or at least Jo), if there are so many women playing recreational tennis here, why do we not have women playing professionally.

Just asking.

Time To Cry Tuesday – A Rock Icon

NYC. Hottest day of the summer (by at least 10 degrees). Summerstage in Central Park. The Pretenders.

An amazing night that, even in the heat, reminds me why being too far from NY would never work out for me. The people, the energy, the music. Made me all sentimental in a wow I forgot how much fun the summer in the city can be sort of way. Certainly not a real Time to Cry Tuesday, but screw it. I made the series, I can break the rule once in awhile. So if you feel like really crying today, think sad thoughts.

A little known Amy fact: If I could be any rock ‘n roller I would hands down, no contest want to be Chrissie Hynde. And it would not even have to be the Chrissie of years past. At 58 she can still rock the house. The passion is still there, her voice is amazing, she looks great, and seriously, who does not love a girl that can play guitar like that?

Here is something I did not know, but of course Dr. Jimmy did and pointed it out. She is a strict vegan and animal rights activist. She still owns a Vegan restaurant, The Vegiterranean in her home town of Akron, Ohio (as inI went back to Ohio, and my city was gone’). Note the sign at the concession stand:

pretenders-no-meat

I am not gonna lie, I think the drummer might have been dying for a burger but didn’t want to piss off the boss.

I digress. To Chrissie Hynde, not a diva (that has too much of chick connotation and this is no chick) but an icon who surely stands in the top 5 women rockers of all time. You did not disappoint, and you can rest assured that I still want to be you.

Prozac Country

prozac-don't-worry-be-happy

Sometimes you are driving down the road, you are weary from a long trip and the conversation has long since died down. Then out of nowhere a visual gift is placed before you. Sometimes your husband points it out and then actually thinks that he is not obligated to turn that damn car around and pull over so you can take the shot. (guess who won that argument).

I kid you not, my friends, no retouching here. This is not one of those funny church sign generator images. This is the real deal.

Stuck in the worst kind of traffic on the way home from the Adirondacks, we took a side route and ambled upon someone’s front lawn with this sitting on it. Talk about the mother of all lawn ornaments. This blows away the frogs and bunnies. If you don’t believe this is for real, take a drive down route 199 in Milan, NY and you will find this yourself. It is between the Rhinebeck Bridge and the Taconic State Parkway.

After a 5 hour drive one could surely use a million milligrams of Prozac.

(please note the Keep Out sign in the bottom left corner, guess that means they don’t share)

If you think I’m a bitch…

if-you-think-i'm-a-bitch

… you should meet my mom?! Too funny, especially if you ever met my mom, the sweetest human being on earth.

Ah, nothing like a day in Lake George, the capital of the charmingly cheesy. Miniature golf, wax museums, salt water taffy, fudge, soft ice cream and of course, the tackiest T-shirts on earth.

I always wonder who the hell buys these things. Ok, maybe this one is funny enough to buy as a gag gift, but who actually WEARS them.

Then you sit on a bench and people-watch for awhile and you see all those shirts go walking by. Yes, Middle America is alive and well and dropping the green on tacky Ts.

Crap, I hope my daughter doesn’t own this shirt…

Time to Cry Tuesday – Funny the way it is

late-show-theater

Indulge me one more Dave Matthews related post as tonight I had the thrill of seeing him live at the Ed Sullivan Theater. Yep, Gary and I not only went to the Late Show taping, thanks to a very special old friend, but got in for rehearsal and watched the band practice up close and personal.

Two Daves! What could be better?

Funny the way it is that one day someone is your assistant and you have them doing all sorts of ridiculous things like filling hundreds of little boxes with chocolate and tying ribbons on them, yelling at fed ex and making sure that the messenger has the right address; and then one day 12 years later they get you into the Late Show the night that Dave Matthews is on.

(or even funnier that I could think that last run on sentence was grammatically correct)

I am so proud of how far she has come in her career. And how effortless she makes her job look. She is one of the most entertaining people I have ever known, with a sense of humor that still takes me by surprise. You never quite know what will come out of that crazy mind. She was only a year or two older than my daughter is now when she came to work for us, and was surely the most over-qualified person to ever fill that position. It was a real joy to work with her.

People drift in and out of your life all the time. And if your lucky, they drift right back in and surprise you with how much you truly missed them.

Thanks SB, for a great time and a real thrill. I am so happy to have you back again.

Oh, and I am pretty sure Dave Matthews wanted to meet me, tell him I am sorry we had to rush out.
