Coolest chair ever!

If you have not been following, I have spent the past 4 months dealing with flooding and the subsequent renovation of my home office. If you have been following you are frankly tired of hearing about it and thought the topic was closed. I moved back about 3 weeks ago and I have to say I don’t even mind working it is so cool in there.

Yesterday my favorite new item arrived; the fabulous eye chair in the picture above. I don’t love this solely for its beautiful design and ingenious use of a recycled billboard (yep, that is what it is made from). I love this mostly because it came from the mind and hands of one of my dearest friends from art school. I love it because after all these years her mind is still so free to be able to conceive and execute this.

I would say I know this artist pretty well. I traveled the country in a slick Chevy van with her and we spent a few years in Rochester misbehaving in all sorts of ways. We have been friends for many years, yet her ideas never cease to amaze me. I bow down to her vision and sit down on her eyeball chair. Safe to say no one has had their eyes that closely on my ass in years.

And… We’re Branded!

No, you are not in the wrong place. This is the same old i could cry but i don’t have time with a whole new look.

Yes, this is a tale of the shoemaker’s kids having no shoes. Believe it or not, this blog has been around  since 2008. And yes, I was a graphic designer without branding. I liked to think of it as my rebellion against too many decades in the business. You know, like the fashionista who goes out in sweatpants just to prove she is not shallow.

Actually that is a horrible analogy and the real reason this blog never carried a designed header is because:

a] I was lazy

b] I was never happy with anything I designed for it

c] I was lazy

d] I had commitment probems

e] all of the above

oh and f] I was lazy

Anyway, I bit the bullet, took the plunge, reveled in the fact that I did not toss out that fabulous book of archival drawings in the big office purge and today I bring you the newly branded, jam master i could cry but i don’t have time. (maybe i should change the name to i could design but i don’t have time – but that would not be clever or funny, for that matter)

Ah… change and commitment. Neither are ever comfortable but this was long overdue. I hope I don’t wake in the middle of the night and regret this. (prone to drama)

I am still playing with theme design but this is a start. If you have any comments, critiques, suggestions or opinions… keep them to yourselves.

Just kidding, I would love to hear what you think.

Font Masturbation

No, I did not make up that name, but I wish I did. This is an actual typeface that I found today while doing a font search. I will admit I colored it and added the effects, but hey, who wouldn’t?

You can see it here on my favorite free typeface website, dafont.com. (please keep in mind many of the free fonts are for personal use, if you want to use them commercially you need to contact them. This one in particular would be for EXTREMELY personal use).

This sucker (no pun – ok maybe yes pun) was designed by Graham Meade of GemFonts and I am not going to lie, I think I might have a crush on him. Seriously, how can you not love a guy that designs a typeface like this? It is so beautifully executed with just a hint of the perverse while still maintaining that whimsical aura. (ok, too many years of doing design presentations, I know).

Yes, once again I am an infant. But let’s be honest, that is why most of you come here every day; to see me behaving poorly.

Wishing you all a happy new year, be safe and remember, penic masturbata is just font usage with someone you love. And of course, hoping you do not experience any typface interruptus in 2010.

No wife?

What’s the shot that this guy has a woman living in his house?

Wife: Hon, why don’t you put on your plaid shirt and completely different plaid shorts today, they look so good together.

Husband: Oh, great, and then I can put on a pair of white gym socks with my sandals and round out the outfit.

I took this shot on the same boardwalk as the kid on a leash, dog in a stroller and recession rosaries. AND the 3 hens 3 girls and Hot… Dogs on leaving the zip code. I almost had photographic whiplash by the end of that day! Forgive the posterization, I had to screw around with the levels to get the plaids to read as I was shooting into the sun. Don’t you just hate it when absurdities don’t position themselves in the correct direction?

I am surely no fashionista. Let’s face it, I wear predominantly black clothes. I consider khaki a color. But I am always amazed when I see this kind of blatant fashion violation.

No, this is not even a fashion issue, this is a complete lack of recognition of complimentary design elements and the principles of clashing. This guy is different from the inappropriate T-shirt guys. Those guys made a conscious choice to be what they considered funny or clever, even if they weren’t. This guy? Did he get dressed in the dark? Did no one ever tell him that plaid needs a nice solid to balance it out. Has he never noticed that others don’t dress like this?

Then of course, I got a little sad. What if he lost his wife and she always told him how to dress?

Or maybe, just maybe, the conversation above really did take place.

It takes all kinds.

Lingerie or Purse?

If I ever doubted why I carry a camera in my bag at all times this little frivolity confirmed my desire to always have one handy.

When I see an item like this I wonder if it were transported to a different context might it be seen as the hottest fashion craze? Hang one off the arm of an Olsen twin and these things would be flying off the shelves instead of hanging on the sale rack. The very same sale section where I spotted the Ricky Martin lunchbox back in October.

The odd thing is that these items were not found in a novelty store. I saw them at Pearl Paint, an art and craft supply mega-store that I always make excuses to visit as often as possible. This is the art supply store of my formative art student years. I simply feel better in those aisles with all those tubes and brushes. Yeh well, ok. 

This bustier purse begs the question, “What art supply store buyer would make the choice to stock this item in the first place?” Going through supplier catalogs checking off inventory: oil paint, brushes, gold leaf, erasers, drawing paper, hot pink satin bustier purse with rhinestone accents, erasers, picture frames, clay… Sorry don’t see the logic here. Kind of like the Where’s Waldo of retail.

You know, looking at it now it is growing on me. I am kind of sorry I did not purchase it.

Hmmm, do you think it will still be there tomorrow? Seriously, this could MAKE any outfit at a North Shore Long Island Bar Mitzvah, no?
