Dog Casual

It has been a while since you have seen Mel and I know she has a lot of fans out there. To answer some questions that arise when I post a picture like this:

Does she ever jump out? No, would you?

Will I adopt you? Maybe, but I am pretty sure you won’t like the kibble we feed her.

Do I pose her like that? No, she is a natural.

Is she sad in this picture? No, she makes that pathetic face to get attention.

Is she available for photo ops? Sure, I will tell her agent you are interested.

Ahhh, the life of a dog.

Happy Garbage

Yes, Dr. J, it is time for another garbage post. This scarecrow sort of gave me the creeps. One, because of the horror movie smile, two because I couldn’t see its eyes and three, quite frankly because it took these people six months to toss the Halloween decorations. Seriously, can you imagine the crap they have in their house?

Sorry there was no Mel in this picture, I think the scarecrow creeped her out too.

In case any of you were wondering, no, none of my neighbors have yet to call me on my Garbology photo-taking practices. The key is walk early in the morning.

Stinky Dog

20110408-105117.jpg

Phone rings.

Me: (as I look at the caller ID and see it is my dog groomer) No Way! Laura? Does my dog smell that bad that you are actually calling me?

Laura: Seriously, what is going on with you? The damn dog has not been here since DECEMBER!

Me: Well, actually it is really not THAT bad, I had her groomed at the vet when she went through her diabetic episode back in… oy January.

Laura: Well, ok, that is still really bad.

Me: Have the neighbors been calling you to complain?

Laura: No, but you have to get that dog in here for a bath.

Me: Ok, book her. Hmmm… do you think I need to wash her bed now?

Life with a Diabetic Dog

Oh, and with my husband, of course. A man of brevity, Gary leaves me little notes on the kitchen counter if he leaves before I get up. (he is such a romantic).

I have been battling the plague some sort of sinus/respiratory thing this week and slept in this morning since I was up hacking half the night. I came downstairs to make a cup of tea and found this note on the counter.

Translation: Let the dog out and she did her business, gave her insulin and fed her.

It’s good to laugh first thing in the morning, thanks G.

Time to Cry Tuesday – Old Dog in the Snow

This old girl has always loved the snow. She would be the first one out the door and the last one back in. But 11 some odd winters have played havoc on her old bones and for the first time she had a really hard time this year. Granted we got slammed with a foot and a half and moving around was hard for everyone.

But her heart wanted to bound while her body knew it did not have it in her anymore. Don’t be too sad. She had a modified snow day. And she seemed content to lay in the sun in the front hallway for the remainder of the day watching the weather through the glass.

But I will tell you that first thing this morning when she woke up and went to the back door I could absolutely read her mind, “And I am so supposed to go out and pee in this how?”

A little dog food never hurt anyone

I am convinced that my dog and I are genetically linked. I think I wrote about this once before but I can’t find the post and quite honestly it has been a long day.

Mel and I both suffer from hypothyroidism. Not all that uncommon in women ‘of a certain age‘, this basically means that we have underactive thyroids that do not produce a certain hormone and can cause us to feel sluggish. There are other more miserable things that it can cause but luckily neither one of us gone that far.

As a result of this disorder, I find myself in the odd circumstance to be taking the same medication as my pup. There on the windowsill in the kitchen sit two (almost identical) bottles of pills. One sleepy morning this week I took a pill from my bottle and buried it neatly in a chunk of the wet dog food that I mix in with Mel’s kibble. As I was inserting the pill I noticed it was yellow and not lavender, indicating this was my pill not hers.

Now don’t get me wrong here but at the price I pay for meds these days I was not about to throw away a perfectly good pill just because it had a slight slime of dog food on it. Like any self-respecting dog owner would, I wiped it off and put it back in the bottle.

So if any of you notice me scratching myself behind my ear with my foot or barking uncontrollably this week you will understand why.

A Striking Family Resemblance

Ever since my daughter has been home from school we have noticed that the dog is beginning to look quite a bit like her. What do you think?

Oh, Jana is the one with the glasses.

Time to Cry Tuesday – For the love of a dog

A few years back we were given a plaque in our house (thanks Linda) that reads:

I wish I could be half the person my dog thinks I am.

How true is that? Seriously, she never tells me to stop obsessing, surely never asks me how much coffee I have had, and I don’t believe she has ever told me my ass looks fat in anything.

G-d I love that dog!

Mel is 11. Ok, she is 11 1/2. But she can hold her own on a long walk and is truly the mayor of the neighborhood. In her younger days she was known to wander. She can’t drive, but she thinks she can, she makes an impressive snowball and even has her own calling card.

Many of us have them, these canines we have raised alongside our children. They have walked the floors with us when our kids were sick, sat by our sides at night while we waited up for our teens and licked our tears when we needed a good cry. They love us unconditionally, carry our secrets and act as if a car ride for errands were a trip to the caribbean. They ask for nothing but a belly rub, a scratch behind the ear and table scraps.

Ahhh, the love of a good dog. There is no relationship on earth that compares.

So this Time to Cry Tuesday is a tribute to our Mel and to her dear friends, the ‘senior dogs’ in our lives that have given so much to the families we love: Ginger, Barkley, Penny, Misty, Gus and Cody. You guys rock the dog world!

Proof my dog and I might be genetically linked

meds

Scary, but I think it is true.

My dog has not been feeling well lately. She has been panting at odd times and drinking a ton, so I decided it was time to bring her to the vet. Please understand that I love this animal as if she were part of the family. No, I do not walk her in a stroller, I am able to differentiate between my kids and my pet, but I do love her  just the same.

Keep in mind she just turned 11, so going to the vet to find out what is wrong is a tricky proposition. Nothing worse than dropping 1,000 bucks to find out your dog is terminal. Luckily, she is not. And it only cost $480 to find that out – a bargain.

It seems, good ole Mel suffers from hypothyroidism. This would explain her weight gain (not the table scraps I have berated Gary for giving her) and could explain her other symptoms. Oh, and her pH is off (what the hell?).

So who else in this house suffers from this plight? You guessed it (and the photo gave it away). So, my friends, my dog and I are now on the same meds!

I am praying she does not get rabies!

Not a Snowball’s Chance…

mel_snowball

Once again, the infamous Mel finds herself on the blog. She is truly becoming an internet celebrity. I am not sure but I think I heard her asking for her own spinoff blog. And I saw an application of name change near her bed… she really does not look like a Perez!

Yes folks, that is a snowball in her mouth. She did cheat a bit as I saw her digging and then she jumped in the car with this. I believe there is a tennis ball in the center of that snow. (again, mention of cold balls, this is getting ridiculous).

Note to self: have car cleaned.
