Why I Am

dave-matthews-band

Yes, I just got home from the Dave Matthews show at the beach. And yes, it reminded me ‘Why I Am’.

Just standing in the Jones Beach Amphitheater – even in the bad seats – on a July night, with the smell of the ocean all around me, I am quite sure this is ‘Why I Am’. Hearing the music I love (that I discovered before my kids, the DMB groupies, thank you very much) I realized there is nothing like a night like this to soothe the soul.

Listening to the lyrics of Dive In I was taken by the irony of one particular line:

“Tell me everything is all taken care of by those qualified to take care of it all.”

It occurred to me that I am usually that person.

Crap! I am screwed.

I guess that’s Why I Am.

(‘night all)

Stroller Dog

dog-in-stroller

As a follow up to the leashed toddler from Monday, here is another shot from that same day on the boardwalk.

These confused ‘parents’ had their dog in the stroller. Where the hell was their kid, on a leash? Or better yet at the kennel.

Maybe it was the heat, or perhaps people are just crazy in any weather. What worries me the most is that this is a double stroller, so they are either missing their kid or another dog.

To add a little interest to this post, let’s do a Where’s Amy on this one.

Time to Cry Tuesday – Childhood

oak-school-three

Oak School #3. From tiny acorns to mighty oaks.

This is the sign that sits in front of my elementary school. Just to the left and below the bay window that was my kindergarten room. Inside was the window seat that I sat on and watched my mom walk away the first day of school. Back in the day we did not go to pre-k. This building housed my very first moments in school.

I can still remember the way the stairs were worn in the middle of each step. The way the cafeteria smelled – a cross between tater tots and canned string beans. The nurses office where I took my first eye exam and discovered I needed glasses; the oval baby blue kind (very Brady Bunch, indeed). The amazing Austin Powers style mole on my teacher’s nose. (seriously, we even had a song for it).

The school alma mater was never so deep as to mention acorns to oaks — that sign was added only recently. Yet I do still remember every word. One of the more creative lines:

When I walk to school each day, I stop and look and then I say, “Oak School Three, is the best. It’s really better than all the rest.”

I know what you are thinking, who was the genius that wrote those lyrics?

Why the corny walk down memory lane? Because two of my mightiest oaks of childhood were visiting this weekend from out of town and there is nothing more fun than doing the tour of the formative years with people you shared them with. These particular ‘oaks’ were my brother and his best friend since 2nd grade. These guys were the coolest. Four grades above me, I was lucky if they let me watch TV with them.

This weekend we all spent time together. Going to the beach, walking the boardwalk, hanging at my parents house. If not for my adult nephews to keep us in check I am sure we could have easily reverted back to being the kids in the house. Come to think of it the conversation at brunch was as adolescent as it gets.

Just when you think you are all grown up…

your not.

Thanks guys!

Michael Jackson Trading Cards

micheal-jackson-trading-cards

I saw these at the Brooklyn Flea last week. I got so caught up in taking pictures of everything I saw there that I totally missed the opportunity to buy these. What a great find.

I wonder if there are cards of Michael through the ages. It would be kind of cool to frame 10 cards that show the transition of his face from one era to the next. When they flashed the ‘Thriller Michael’ on the news I was taken back by the way he looked. Still black, he was going through his Diana Ross look alike phase then.

I wondered about these cards, so I did a little digging. Of course someone bought the url michealjacksonfuneral.org (there is a vulture born everyday) and there is a post under the ‘cool stuff‘ section that featured some of them. Seems they were made in the 80s. There are a bunch on ebay and shopzilla. The price is still low but I would imagine with time an unopened pack from this era will be worth something.

Guess I should go back and pick some up.

Talk about packing heat

cannon-balls

This sort of gives cannon balls a new meaning!

Alright, I admit I have reached new depths of sophomoric behavior. There should be a shot of me falling down laughing on the lawn in front of him while taking the picture.

Yes, Gary is AGAIN a good sport. And yes, this also explains his comment about explosives in cameras. He claims to be humoring me but I know he loves doing this. At least I think he does.

Hey, if after all these years we cannot amuse ourselves, what is the point?

Damn dog can’t read!

caution-dog

Featured here, once again, is my beloved canine, Mel. Yes, that would be the Mel who seems to know no boundries. The only dog that can hold a snowball in her mouth. In the car!

On our daily morning walk we get to watch all the home renovations. It’s fun to see them change day to day.

For me.

For her, she simply wants into every construction site. This one did not have any fencing, and sadly my girl can not read; english OR spanish, but nice that they make an effort to be inclusive.

Luckily I had a camera.

The Art of the T-shirt

Soaring-mmortal-Blazing

I love the summertime when people proudly sport their favorite T-shirts. In some circles, picking out the T to wear to an event is akin to teenage girls and their outfit obsessions. Come on guys, the ones who do this know who you are, I don’t think I have to single you out here.

This guy was surely standing in front of his dresser pondering the perfect message to wear to the Dark Star Orchestra concert at the beach on Governors Island. This is a very T-shirt appreciative crowd. What you wear is admired, and yes sometimes coveted, like jewelry at a bit yenta-fest Bar-Mitzvah.

I Googled the message on this shirt so I would not appear pop culture ignorant in this instance (heaven forbid). I could not find any reference to the Soaring Immortal Blazing or any other phrase like Golden-maned warrior, but hey, this could be so hip it is not Googleable. (Is that a word? If not it should be). Or maybe fringe. But nonetheless, not only did I not find it, I had to read this shirt 3 times to absorb the message.

Perhaps it is simply because I am unburdened by the gravity of my mission.

World’s Smallest Dog Bowl

world's-smallest-dog-bowl

I came across this woman giving her dog a drink at the Brooklyn Flea today.

I have tortured all that travel with me and shot hundreds of pictures this weekend but for some reason this one stood out.  If you know me, I am not a fan of small dogs (they are more like high maintenance cats in my book) but the way this woman was using the cap of her water bottle to give her little yap yap yorkie a drink was a perfect moment in time.

The tattoo, the nail polish and the way the woman’s hair blended with the dog’s struck me as being so sweet.

Ok, so maybe I had a little heat stroke and felt compassion for the little yapper. I am not totally heartless.

Cinema on the Bay presents Jaws

jaws-cinema-on-the-bay

I kid you not. In my sleepy little town they have this lovely movie series at Sunset Park, aptly named for the obvious reason that it has the most magnificent sunsets over the bay.

Do you think they decided to show this movie because it was funny to show Jaws by the water? This banner across Main Street (yes, we have a Main Street, we ooze quaint) caught my eye and cracked me up. Lovely rendering, no?

I am not sure if I am just paying more attention because I am working hard at being alert and not rushing, or if there are an unusual amount of humorous things out there lately.

What will they show next week The Poseiden Adventure?

Hairy Backs and Tattoos

With the rain finally gone I have been fortunate enough to have spent a good amount of time on the beaches in the past couple of weeks. As always there are plenty of hairy backs out there. The mangroomer should be doing a booming biz.

If you will remember, I am both fascinated and aggravated by back hair. Some of these guys look like they are wearing sweaters. It must be awfully hot under there. Look at this guy, I think he is down by the ocean just to cool off. The spinal hair is particularly fascinating on this guy. Look at that dense patch down the middle. It almost looks like hairy vertebrae.

hairy-back

I have also noticed that there are way more tattoos this year. It seems everyone is sporting ink. And a lot of it is major. Saw some guy in Fire Island with full photorealistic portraits of his kids on his arm. I wonder if they will age as his skin sags.

tats-and-hair

This guy here had a wonderful combination of tats and the most bizarre body hair pattern I have ever seen. What is with that tuft of hair at the base of his spine crawling down his up way to high bathing suit. Eww!

Again, we women are out there spending all kinds of money waxing, lasering, shaving, eppilating, dipilatoring our lives away and these guys just let the hair out of the bag and don’t think twice.

Who are the schmucks here?
