Why I Am

dave-matthews-band

Yes, I just got home from the Dave Matthews show at the beach. And yes, it reminded me ‘Why I Am’.

Just standing in the Jones Beach Amphitheater – even in the bad seats – on a July night, with the smell of the ocean all around me, I am quite sure this is ‘Why I Am’. Hearing the music I love (that I discovered before my kids, the DMB groupies, thank you very much) I realized there is nothing like a night like this to soothe the soul.

Listening to the lyrics of Dive In I was taken by the irony of one particular line:

“Tell me everything is all taken care of by those qualified to take care of it all.”

It occurred to me that I am usually that person.

Crap! I am screwed.

I guess that’s Why I Am.

(‘night all)

Hairy Backs and Tattoos

With the rain finally gone I have been fortunate enough to have spent a good amount of time on the beaches in the past couple of weeks. As always there are plenty of hairy backs out there. The mangroomer should be doing a booming biz.

If you will remember, I am both fascinated and aggravated by back hair. Some of these guys look like they are wearing sweaters. It must be awfully hot under there. Look at this guy, I think he is down by the ocean just to cool off. The spinal hair is particularly fascinating on this guy. Look at that dense patch down the middle. It almost looks like hairy vertebrae.

I have also noticed that there are way more tattoos this year. It seems everyone is sporting ink. And a lot of it is major. Saw some guy in Fire Island with full photorealistic portraits of his kids on his arm. I wonder if they will age as his skin sags.

This guy here had a wonderful combination of tats and the most bizarre body hair pattern I have ever seen. What is with that tuft of hair at the base of his spine crawling down his up way to high bathing suit. Eww!

Again, we women are out there spending all kinds of money waxing, lasering, shaving, eppilating, dipilatoring our lives away and these guys just let the hair out of the bag and don’t think twice.

Who are the schmucks here?

Traveling to another dimension

amy-at-the-beach

If you have wondered where I have been these past few days, I have traveled to another dimension. One that I rarely visit.

Unplugged.

Yes, I know it is hard to picture me there. And to be perfectly honest I had a functioning blackberry so I could monitor email, blog comments, twitter and Facebook. But I chose to not participate for a few days.

It was Fire Island; synonymous with sea air, alcohol and dear friends that prompted my desire to just spectate. The only thing missing was a repeat performance from the cucumber plant that we witnessed last year.

Funny, I ran into friends on the beach who asked me what I was doing going for a walk and not blogging with the breaking news about Palin going on. I will leave her for another day. I only hope my Palin condom just went up in value with this new twist of the bizarre.

Have no fear, though. I shot over 100 images. I think this one is my fave. I will not be so lame as to make this a ‘where’s Amy?’ shot, because it is obvious. But this image captures the amazing place that I was. Both figuratively and literally.

Thank you Sam and Katie, for hosting yet another perfect weekend at the beach. This shot illustrates the inside, outside, sky, sea, sand, trees, architectural wonder that they call their beach home.

Don’t I blend in nicely with the environment?

Do Hare Krishna take a day off?

Sitting on the beach today, we were behind this man with an intriguing hairstyle. I mean no disrespect as am truly tolerant of all cultures. But this one had me baffled. There was much speculation about it. Was this a rat tail of the 80’s, tied up for the sun and surf? But what was with the shaved sides of the head? It was kind of a cool look but we needed answers.

Then it came to us. Maybe he was a Hare Krishna on a day off.

He could very well have left the airport, robe and bells behind for a little fresh air.

Hmmm… maybe I had a little too much sun today.

Honey, am I as fat as this guy?

Honestly, how many of you ask this when you are sitting on the beach with your significant other? You are not all that confident with how it is all hanging and you need a barometer for what your body looks like out there. Yeh, right, we are too old for this behavior and way to secure.

Or not.

So, someone is walking down the beach and you pull the headphones out of your mate’s ears and ask them if the guy/girl walking down the beach is fatter then you. We do this all the time. When will we grow out of body image obsessions? Oh right, when we are dead!

Back to the story. There I am, innocently reading my book on a beautiful Rhode Island beach on the most glorious day and I look up to see this rather large man looking out at the ocean. Now don’t think of this as mean, I for one can stand to lose a few myself. But I could not help but pull out my camera to capture his silhouette against the backdrop of the sea and sky. It was so perfect. The shapes, the color, the water, the foam of the waves…

and then who comes up right next to him and poses? Gary, of course. (no disrespect to this man, but he did kind of set himself up in front of my camera).

I love the scale in this image – and the matching color scheme of the bathing suits. Looks kind of like a fashion layout, doesn’t it?

Oh Gary, no worries, you are one svelte man for sure!

How could you not love a man that not only tolerates the fact that you are photographing everything in sight, but embraces your snap happy behavior and poses for you? It seems that he has begun to embrace the spirit of blogging.

Either that or it is just another survival technique for living with his resident lunatic.
